Nanophotonics, Nanoelectronics and Nanomagnetism - NANO3

The France Excellence summer school "NANO3 ", hold by Paris-Saclay University will take place from 3rd to 28th of July 2018 at Paris.



The NANO3 school is a 4-week intensive course in nanophotonics and nanoelectronics and nano-magnetism, an outstanding field of research developed at Paris-Saclay University, the biggest university cluster in France. The students will experience outstanding laboratory training and projects together with exciting cultural activities in and around Paris.

The aim of the NANO3 school is to provide Chinese students with precise information on the French research system. The methodology used is diverse: theoretical courses, lab trainings, industrial seminars, research projects, as well as visits of laboratories.  


The school includes elements of French culture with language courses and visits in the region of Paris.


Several networking events are organized with researchers and PhD students:  buffets and cocktails, meeting with members of the association « Union des chercheurs et des étudiants chinois à Paris-Sud », meeting with current PhD students financed by the CSC programme and other PhD students concerned by the field of study. 


Lectures and experiments will take place at Paris-Saclay University, a privileged site with several companies based on the campus, which will participate in the school through seminars (eg: III / V- laboratory, THALES-TRT, SILTENE). The training will be delivered by senior scientists of the Center for Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies (C2N ). The C2N is an internationally recognized laboratory in the fields of Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies, including nanophotonics and nanoelectronics. The C2N micro-nano-technology facility is completed by a rich set of nano-scale growth and characterization materials, and various nanophotonic experiment benches (characterization of nano-objects, photonic circuits, etc.) in the field of micro-nano-sensors, and in electronics (magnetic and electrical behaviour of nanostructures and submicron components).  




Arrival in France

Participants will be welcomed at Charles-de-Gaulle airport in Paris on Monday 2nd July 2018. 

Courses will start on Tuesday 3rd July 2018.

At their arrival in France, participants will be welcomed at Charles-de-Gaulle airport by members of the International Relations Office as well as by students of Paris-Sud University and will be conducted to their accommodation. The residence can be reached with the suburb train “RER B” (direct train from the airport to Massy), and then by bus (Massy – Plateau de Saclay). A welcome diner will be organized on the same day.



The school will provide accommodation for all the participants in a new residence offering single studios with private bathroom. The residence is located 10 minutes away from the C2N building by bus. 



All meals are included in the programme (breakfast, lunches and dinners) and will take place in university restaurants. Buffets will also be organized in other places (restaurants, castles…) for special events.



Participants will be provided with the Paris monthly public transport pass at their arrival (Navigo card – 5 zones). This pass gives access to unlimited travel in the region of Paris.


Return to China

End of the school and return to China: Friday 27th July 2018.








Courses will be spread over 4 weeks and will consist of 24h of theoretical courses and 11h of practical experiments.


Topics will be divided as follows:


1) Photonics, plasmonics, and nanophotonics :

- Photonics and optoelectronics 5h + 3h of practical experiments

- Plasmonics + Metamaterials 3h + 4h of practical experiments

- Nonlinear photonics 2h

- THz photonics and optoelectronics 2h


2) Nanoelectronics and nanomagnetism:

- Introduction to Nanoelectronics 6h

- Magnetic thin films and spintronics 3h + 4h of practical experiments

- Mesoscopic physics 3h

The team of professors is composed of professors from Paris-Saclay University and CNRS (National Research Centre) researchers. These professors regularly teach in the Master 2 Nanosciences of Paris-Saclay University and in international masters.


Other activities


Besides theoretical courses, the scientific training consists of:

- an introductory session of the French research system,

- practical trainings in research laboratories;

- visits of 3 major laboratories of the physics department, including a visit of C2N, LPS (Laboratory of Solid Physics) and ISMO (Institute of Molecular Sciences of Orsay);

- industrial presentations and seminars;

- research projects and immersion in laboratories

- a mini-conference ("workshop") at the end of the school to assess the results of the research projects;


Finally, the NANO3 school will include a training specially dedicated to the preparation of PhD applications in France, in particular through the China Scholarship Council and the French Doctoral Schools.




French courses


Participants will get a basic introduction to French language (16h) in order to promote cultural exchanges. Participants will face professional language course professors and will practice through real-life situation in the city.


Cultural visits


We hope to provide our students with a unique experience in the region of Paris and a chance to meet other students. In order to meet that requirement, the school offers a wide range of social activities including:

- NANO3 buffets and cocktails

- Visits of Paris (monuments, museums, team building activities and shopping)

- Visit of Castles (Versailles, Vaux le Vicomte)

- Day at Disneyland Paris

The French Embassy reserves a limited number of grants to students with an exceptional academic background. Grants cover the tuition fees but do not cover the trip from China to Paris.
