Chemistry & Environmental Sciences: Analysis, Characterisation and Remediation of Contaminated Soils and Waters

 
The France Excellence 2018 Summer School "Chemistry & Environmental Sciences: Analysis, Characterisation and Remediation of Contaminated Soils and Waters" will take place from June 23rd to July 15th 2018 in Université Clermont Auvergne.


General presentation:

 

This summer school is organised in Clermont-Ferrand, which is a city located in the centre of France. The natural environment around the city is exceptional with diversity of landscapes and the unique volcanic landscape, in particular the beauty spots of the puy de Dôme (giant among Auvergne’s volcanoes). Clermont-Ferrand is also famous for its very special black stone architecture in the old city centre and for its university « Université Clermont Auvergne (UCA) », a multidisciplinary university open to the world for the international cooperation and more particularly with China.

 

The scientific topic of this summer school is based on one of the main challenges of the XXIst century, the protection of the environment and more particularly the quality of soils and water resources. In fact, soils or water resources face high anthropic pressure since more than 50 years and it is urgent to work on their preservations for a sustainable development and for the future generations. Environmental protection, which includes restoring and preserving water and soil resources, is now a priority for China. New technologies, clean processes involving chemical reactions are among the ways to be explored to repair the harmful effects on our environment. It is within this very general framework that we propose this summer school for students of Chinese nationality to train them in these environmental issues and new cost-effective processes for soil and water remediation.

 

The site of Clermont-Ferrand is particularly adequate to welcome this summer school first of all because of the scientific potential which exists in the field of the chemistry of the environment and more particularly in that of the water treatment. Indeed, the Federation of Environmental Researches (FR CNRS-UCA-INRA N° 3467) and the axis "Chemistry of the Environment" of the Institute of Chemistry of Clermont-Ferrand (UMR UCA-CNRS-SIGMA Clermont N° 6296) will be the scientific structures which will supply equipment and staffs for the smooth running of this summer school. Furthermore, a strong and constant partnership exists now for more than 10 years with the Graduate School of Chemistry of Rennes (ENSCR, Rennes University) with colleagues specialists more particularly on the treatment of soils and scale up of water treatment technologies.

 

Organisation of the stay:

 

You will arrive on Saturday, June 23rd, 2018 at the airport of Paris Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle where you will be welcomed and accompanied for your transfer to the station of Paris Bercy to take the bus or the train for Clermont-Ferrand by a student in international tourism hired for 3 weeks. This person who will welcome you from your arrival in France will accompany you throughout the duration of the school for the administrative, practical aspects (accommodation, restoration), tourist...

 

You will be accommodated in individual studios in the student residence on the Cézeaux campus near the faculty of chemistry. Meals will be mainly taken in the restaurants of Crous located on the Cézeaux campus. They will be taken most of the time in companies of the professors and researchers of the summer school. The campus of Cézeaux is harmed by 2 stops of the tramway of the city of Clermont-Ferrand. This tramway line allows moving easily on the whole urban area. A subscription of 3 weeks to the public transports of the urban area is included in registration fees.

 

The return in China will be organised on Sunday, July 15th, 2018 since the airport of Paris Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle.

I) Chemical kinetics (6h)

            - Homogeneous and heterogeneous kinetics

            - Advancement, conversion degree and thermodynamic of reactions

            - Activation processes (temperature effect)

            - Radical reactions, linear, ramified and steady-state approach.

            - Half-life time determination and kinetic constant and chemical kinetic models

 

II) Analytical chemistry (6h)

            - Introduction and fundamentals of separation techniques

            - Complexation techniques and chemical derivatization

            - UV-vis, fluorescence and IR spectroscopy

            - HPLC and Ionic chromatography

            - Mass spectrometry and NMR

- Application to the quantification and characterization of organic and inorganic compounds

 

III) Chemical speciation in water and soils (4h)

- Acid-base equilibrium, dissolution, precipitation, complexation, redox reactions.

- Anthropic and natural water cycles

            -  Biogeochemical cycling of elements

- Characterization of contaminated and un-contaminated soils

            - Risk assessment and remediation technologies

 

IV) Biological and chemical depollution processes (6h)

            - Introduction

            - Microbiological remediation of water and soils

            - Homogeneous and heterogeneous oxidation catalysis

            - Kinetic and thermodynamic modelling

            - Upscaling and field applications

 

V) Iron chemistry and application to the depollution processes (6h)

(Gilles Mailhot DR, CNRS)

            - Iron, occurrence and water (photo)-chemistry

            - Fe-based catalysts: principles and applications

            - Use of iron species in advanced oxidation processes (AOP’s)

            - Advantages, outlooks and future prospects

 

 

Six Conferences will be given by a high level national/international expert:

- Pr. Feng Wu, Wuhan University, China;

- Pr. Alessandra Bianco-Prevot, Torino University, Italy

- Pr. Dominique Wolbert, ENSCR, Rennes University, France

 

French courses as foreign language (20h) will be given by the centre FLEURA of the Clermont Auvergne University. These courses will give a first approach of the French language and will allow to become integrated more quickly into the culture and into the French everyday life.

 

Written and oral evaluation of skills acquired during the courses: 2 h of written evaluation + 30 min of oral examination

 

Visits of laboratories and scientific sites of interest (in English language) and detail of cultural events:

 

Scientific visits:

- The Institute of Chemistry of Clermont-Ferrand (ICCF) including 5 laboratories.

- The wastewater treatment plant of the city of Clermont-Ferrand.

- Sites of sampling in the Allier River.

- The monitoring centre of the atmosphere situated at the top of puy-de-Dôme volcano.

 

Main cultural events:

- Evening of welcome with presents and dinner offered by the University Clermont Auvergne.

- Guided tour of the city of Clermont-Ferrand.

- Climb from the pass of Ceyssat at the top of puy-de-Dôme and visit of the site with the Temple of Mercury.

- Visit of the city of Vichy (12 essential places).

- Weekend in Lyon: visit of the city and participation to the festival of the nights of Fourvière.

- Visit of Vulcania, French centre of scientific culture and amusement park around the volcanism.

 

All these visits will be framed by professional guides and the student in international tourism hired for 3 weeks.

The French Embassy reserves a limited number of grants to students with an exceptional academic background. Grants cover the tuition fees but do not cover the trip from China to Paris.
