INNOV@INSA, European perspectives in engineering and innovation

The France Excellence 2018 Summer School "INNOV@INSA" will take place from June 26th to July 20th 2018 in INSA LYON.

INSA Lyon is one of the great French universities for science and technology. Engineering students and PhD candidates are trained to become humanists highly talented and both innovative and entrepreneurial.

In term of research, INSA Lyon includes 23 research laboratories, and 7 international laboratories, including an Associated International Laboratory in medical imaging (METISLAB) settled in Harbin in 2014.

INSA Lyon has been working with China for 38 years, and strong links have been developed between teachers and researchers. This longstanding collaboration unites the triptych “Education-Research-Industry” through constructive and innovative projects. With the support of China Scholarship Council, each year about 10 Chinese PhD candidates receive a 42-month scholarship to come to INSA Lyon.



Arrival in France

Lyon has an international airport (Saint exupéry – LYS), with connections to European major hubs.

You will arrive in Lyon on June the 25th, an electronic ticket will be sent to you a few days before your departure to take the shuttle from the airport to the city centre. Someone will wait for you at the airport or in the city centre to drop you at INSA Lyon (according to the Chinese students’ arrival schedule).



You will stay in a twin-room on INSA campus (shard with a foreign student taking part in the INNOV@INSA program), with a kitchenette (furnished of utensils), and private bathroom. You will live very close to the tram that will allow you to get to the city center in 15 minutes.


You will be given 20 one-day passes (one for each day you will have an outdoor activity/class).


All lunches are included in the summer program and will be taken on and around the campus. Regarding breakfasts and dinners, you will be able to cook by yourself in your room. 3 breakfasts and 4 dinners will be provided by INSA Lyon, 22 breakfast and 20 dinners will be at your own expense. 


Location of courses 

Most of the courses will take place on INSA campus. Some hours of class will take place in the city center with a teacher.

- For the Management and Innovation unit: 45 hours, included 3 hours of market survey in the city center with the teacher; and a company’s visit (Michelin, Renault Trucks – to be confirmed)

- For the French Language, Cross-Cultural Communication, Industry & Society unit: 45 hours included classes in various districts in Lyon to explore French culture




INSA Lyon’s summer school offers 2 units (both compulsory):

- Management and Innovation in Europe: 45 hours of class driven by Beatrice Frezal, academic coordinator, for 6 ECTS credits


The whole of this unit is driven by an innovation project conducted by a team of 4 to 6 students (depending on the number of students taking part in the program) and calle

      Assessed exercises: 30% of the course mark

d the CIBUM challenge (Creativity to Innovation to Business Model)


Each team will have to invent a new technological offer on a given need, product or service, for the French market and prepare the launching strategy. The jury will evaluate the creativity, level of innovation, relevance of the offer to French customers, and the credibility of the business model. The oral presentation will be part of the assessment. 

The assessment will also include quizzes and exercises done during certain lectures.

      CIBUM Challenge: 70% of the course mark


Besides theses classes, we will organize 2 sessions of 3 hours each with researchers and PhD students to give you the opportunity:

- to discuss about research at INSA Lyon

- to meet up with researchers and PhD students in your area of study

French courses

- French Language, Cross-Cultural Communication, Industry & Society: 45 hours of class driven by Jeannie Jouffroy, academic coordinator, for 6 ECTS credits


This unit is divided into three parts:

- Introduction to French Language and Culture: The focus of this unit will be on the oral French used in daily life.

- Cross-Cultural Communication: Using interactive teaching tools such as student-led discussions, debates and interviews this section of the course aims to build the knowledge base and the cultural empathy necessary to increase the students’ ability to perceive, analyze and understand cross-cultural differences.

- Industry and Society: Using a case-study approach, we will use our location in Lyon, France’s ‘Second City’, as a base for studying the impact of different industries on society and social institutions over time.

Cultural visits

In addition to the classes, we will offer some cultural activities such as:

- an official opening dinner in a local restaurant

- a day-trip to Annecy included a guided-visit of the old town, a picnic in front of the lake and some free-time in the city

- a day-trip to Chamonix included a visit of the highest peak in Europe, a lunch in a restaurant and some free-time in the city

- a cooking activity

- an orienteering in Lyon city center with a student association

- a closing ceremony with a cocktail

- a company’s visit

Most of the activities are organised with support and participation of INSA Lyon permanent students and will give you opportunity to meet French young people.


The INNOV@INSA summer school is a multi-cultural program. One of its strength is the diversity of students taking part in the program. This program is open to partners in Asia, Australia, New-Zealand and Europe. Only 10 slots are provided for Chinese students. This program is opened to science and engineering students.

Accommodation, meals and lunches are included. The 22 Breakfast and 20 dinners will remain at charge of the student.

The summer school will deliver 6 ECTS (Scientific Courses) and 6 ECTS (French Language).

The summer school is open to all international students.

The French Embassy reserves a limited number of grants to students with an exceptional academic background. Grants cover the tuition fees but do not cover the trip from China to Paris.
