The France Excellence summer school 2018 dedicated to “Green & Sustainable Chemistry” will be held from July 2 to July 22 at the University of Strasbourg.

The France Excellence summer school 2018 dedicated to “Green & Sustainable Chemistry” will be held from July 2 to July 22 at the University of Strasbourg in the Chemistry Department (Faculty of Chemistry), located within Strasbourg, nearby the Old Medieval City (see http://www.en.strasbourg.eu/en/discover-the-city/) and nearby the European Institutions (see http://www.en.strasbourg.eu/en/europe-international/european-capital/).
The main Campus of the University of Strasbourg (see http://www.en.unistra.fr/index.php?id=21304) is indeed very close and even at walking distance from the city historical center (see http://www.otstrasbourg.fr/en/).
With more than 2000 years of History, Strasbourg is a middle size town, still having a lot of well-reserved historical buildings, from the Middle Age to the XIXth century (Neue Stadt). Both parts are now classified by UNESCO as world heritage. Furthermore, Strasbourg is also hosting most of the European Institutions (European Parliament, Justice & Human Right Court, Pharmacopeia, Council of Europe).

Context of the Summer School:
Green Chemistry emerged from the increasing environmental problems challenging our planet at the end of the XXth century. Pollutions, greenhouse gas emissions and primary resources rarefaction have lead chemists to look for alternative and sustainable processes that minimize the use and generation of hazardous substances, reduce as much as possible energy use, while designing safer and biodegradable products.

Based on biomass utilization as carbon source, catalysis, reduction of harmful and volatile solvents, relying on efficient atom economy processes, Green Chemistry tends to improve known chemical transformations, while trying to develop sustainable, new and innovative ones.

A research initiation:
With here again a unique history, the University of Strasbourg, created in the XVIth century (1538 and 1621), has hosted numerous prestigious professors and researchers, especially in Chemistry. L Pasteur, A. Baeyer, E. Fischer, H. Staudinger are among the most famous, all being awarded Nobel prices in Chemistry; and the Chemistry Department is still a highly renowned research place with its 3 Nobel prices still active.

Within one of the most reputed Chemistry Department (see http://www.en.unistra.fr/index.php?id=21708), you will get high-level courses in English from distinguished professors and researchers, including a lecture by one of the last Nobel price in Chemistry. You will also gain true research training with different research projects on various Green Chem topics.

Details about the Summer School:

ORGANIZATION:

Arrival:     July 1 2018
Starting & closing dates: July 2 up to July 20 2018
Return:     July 22 2018

Arrival in France and transfer:
You will arrive on Sunday July 1 at the train station in Strasbourg after a transfer from the Charles de Gaulle airport (Paris) to the high-speed train (TGV), the latter being in the airport ground level. Note that the TGV ticket could be included in your travel ticket, and if you choose Air France company, your luggage(s) will be handled from the airport to Strasbourg.
Otherwise, you can choose a flight via Amsterdam (Netherlands), to arrive directly at Strasbourg airport.
We will pick you up at the Strasbourg train station or at Strasbourg airport and drop you to your residency upon arrival.

Housing accommodation:

You will have a room reserved in a student hostel, located in the City Center, close to the Cathedral (http://www.fec-strasbourg.org/hebergement/). You will be assigned a room equipped with a washbasin, shower and toilet cabin, fridge, heating plate and WIFI connection. The hall of residence comprises also a sport room, laundry and restaurant room.

Meals:

In French culture, lunches and dinners represent unique opportunities to meet people and freely discuss. In the context of this Summer School, this will be particularly true with your professors. Obviously, meals will also offer you unique chance to practice your French.
As one University student restaurant is located in the campus, most of the lunches will be taken there (see https://www.crous-strasbourg.fr/restaurant/resto-u-esplanade/).
Usually breakfasts and dinners will be taken at the student hostel (http://www.fec-strasbourg.org/restaurant-universitaire/).
As several cultural events are planed downtown or in typical neighboring cities, at least 3 meals - mostly dinners - will be taken in typical/traditional restaurants.

Transportations in Strasbourg:
Due to the convenient and human size of Strasbourg city and due to the nice location of the central campus, where will be located the Summer School, most transportations could easily be performed through walk. For example, the Old City with its Cathedral and typical wooden houses is within 20 mn walking distances from the Campus.

If necessary or for longer trips, Strasbourg offers a convenient Tram network (see https://www.cts-strasbourg.eu/en/) with 2 tram stations located along the Campus ('Université' station and 'Observatoire' station), as well as an extensive bus service all over the city and suburbs.
Tickets will be provided for using them.
