Meeting and pick-up in Paris airport on Sunday 30 June 2019

First classes on Monday 1 July 2019

The school occurs over 2 different locations, first 2 weeks on the sea side in La Rochelle, then 2 weeks in Paris, with visit of the Loire valley castle during the transfer.

 

La Rochelle

The University of La Rochelle is a French higher education and research institution founded in 1993. It has four faculties, ten laboratories and ca. 8200 students and 900 employees. The university was recently reorganized to specialize in three major transformations ongoing within society: sustainability, environment and digitization.

Paris

Inria, the French National Institute for computer science and applied mathematics, promotes scientific excellence for technology transfer and society. Graduates from the world's top universities, Inria's 2,600 employees rise to the challenges of digital sciences. Research at Inria is organised in “project teams” which bring together researchers with complementary skills to focus on specific scientific projects.

1 - FACILITIES

ARRIVAL IN FRANCE

Participants will be welcomed at Charles-de-Gaulle airport in Paris on Sunday 30 June 2019, we will travel together by TGV train to La Rochelle and on to the accomodation.

Courses will start on Monday 1 July 2019.

A welcome diner will be organized on the same day.

 

ACCOMODATION

La Rochelle

Accommodation will consist in individual rooms, at Arpae and cité Antinéa of CROUS. Accommodation is a 5 minute walk from the lecture room, a 10 minute walk to the beach, and a 15 minute walk to the old harbour.

Paris

The students will be lodged at Cité internationale universitaire de Paris 17, bd Jourdan, 75014 Paris. Breakfasts will be provided (July 15 to July 26).

 

MEALS

Lunches will be included during weekdays.  All meals will be included during weekend activities.

 

TRANSPORTATION

Both in La Rochelle and Paris, you will be provided with travel cards upon arrival, giving unlimited access to the La Rochelle and Paris regions.

 

Transfer from La Rochelle to Paris is of course included, it will occur on 13-14 July 2019 and will include the visit of the Loire valley castles.

 

RETURN TO CHINA

End of the school: Friday 26th July 2019.

2 - SCIENTIFIC SYLLABUS

 LECTURES (To be confirmed)

Week 1 (1-5 July): Document Analysis

- An Introduction to Document Analysis – 8 hours

- Document Fraud Detection – 8 hours

- Historical document analysis – 8 hours

- French culture and French as a foreign language – 4 hours

 

Week 2 (8-12 July): Document Understanding: Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval

- Introduction to Natural Language Processing – 8 hours

- Robust Resource-Free language analysis – 6 hours

- Social Networks Analysis – 6 hours

- Data Mining for Information Retrieval – 6 hours

- French culture and French as a foreign language – 4 hours

 

Week 3 (15-19 July)

- Data Science (Linear algebra, optimization, applications, kernels, classification, kernel PCA/CCA, dependency measures/distances, hypothesis testing, acceleration schemes.)

- GATE (Text Engineering Platform)

- French language and culture classes

 

Week 4

- Natural Language Processing (NLP) (Foundations of NLP: corpora, tokenization, stemming, term vector representations, POS tagging, parsing, language models, stopwords, text classification and clustering, dialogue systems. Deep learning in NLP: recurrent neural networks, LSTM, word vector representations, end-to-end dialogue systems.)

- French language and culture classes

 

 The school is open to Master student only

 

OTHER SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES

Every course block consists of about half lecture time, half lab exercises. More, research projects will be proposed to the students, where they will have to put in applications all the concepts learned during the summer school. If the opportunity arises, students will also attend a PhD defence. Finally, a tour of the L3i laboratory will be organised to present effective works driven by researchers.

 

3- CULTURAL SYLLABUS

FRENCH COURSES

French language and culture classes will be organized and proposed through the 4 weeks of the school.

Students will also be able to discover French Culture and learn more on French language through several events (degustation of French typical gastronomy, language exchange with French students, animations during social events...-)

 

VISITS

Tour 1: Fort Boyard and the Isle of Aix

During the first week

This tour will start straight from the old harbour of La Rochelle. A boat trip will take us to the island of Aix, via Fort Boyard.

The boat will thus leave us for some lunch and some hours of freet-time (wallking, cycling, swimming, visiting museums) on the Île-d'Aix.

Tour 2: Loire Valley Castles : Chambord, Chenonceau

Weekend of 13/14 July - Departure from La Rochelle and arrival in Paris.

This tour will take us from La Rochelle to the Loire valley and the magnificent castles of the French kings. We will discover three of the Loire Valley's most famous châteaux with an official guide.

-The Aquarium: Nature fans will enjoy the huge aquarium, which can be found within easy walking distance of the harbour.

-Port des Minimes: One of the biggest ports of pleasure boats in Europe.
