University Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 will offer a summer school program in from July 1st to July 26th 2019. Located in Montpellier, the summer school main topics will be cultural production, cultural policies and heritage development.

University Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 (UPVM) is one of the oldest universities in Europe, which keeps with dynamism the long academic tradition of the city dating back from the Middle Ages. UPVM, with its 20.000 students, develops with determination, creativity and innovation its many assets as a university specializing in literature, languages, arts, social sciences and humanities (LLASHS).
This Pre-Doctoral Summer School has been elaborated in such a way to be attractive to international students wishing to undertake PhD studies on topics as globalized as cultural production, cultural policies and heritage development by training them in close contact with the dynamics of different geographical areas and different socio-economic actors along with a strong methodological preparation.




Participants will be welcomed at Montpellier Saint-Roch Train Station on Sunday June 30th 2019 afternoon. Courses will start on Monday July 1st 2019.

Participants will be welcomed on their arrival in Montpellier by members of the International Relations and Francophonie Office (DRIF) or by UPVM students at Montpellier Saint-Roch Train Station.
Transfer will be organized towards the University residence halls.


Accommodation will be organized in university residence halls, in private 15m² rooms with private bathrooms, offering non-stop reception. The residences are located within 10 minutes walking distance to the campus, and less than 5 minutes from a Tramway station that connects with the city center (reached in 15 minutes).


Meals can be taken in the University Restaurant, located on campus, or in nearby cafeterias.

Breakfast will be provided.

Lunches will be organized from Monday until Thursday (Friday is reserved for outings).


Transportation within the city of Montpellier will have to be paid by participants (10€ for a ten-trip ticket; 17,10€ for a 1week unlimited ticket; 1,60€ for a single trip ticket). Transportation for cultural outings and the weekend in Barcelona are included in the price of the Pre-Doctoral Summer School.


End of the school and return to China: Friday July 26th 2019



Lectures are open to Masters’ students looking to pursue their studies at Doctoral-level. A total of 40 hours through the four-week programme will be given.

Each week will be dedicated to a specific theme and the outings and cultural activities will be organized accordingly (10 hours of courses per week, in addition to French as a Foreign Language and Methodology modules):

  • Identity & Heritage
  • Urban Development & Heritage
  • Landscape Narrative
  • Art, Culture & Public Action

Academic team: will be composed of fully qualified university professors or lecturers specialists in the concerned fields and who supervise Phd Studies for UPVM Doctoral students:

  • Claude CHASTAGNER, Professor of English Studies, specialized in Cultural Studies and on intercultural issues
  • Dominique CROZAT, Professor in Geography, specialized in Tourism et Sustainable Territory Development
  • Vincent CHALLET, Professor in History, specialized in Medieval History and Cultural Heritage
  • Nathalie MOUREAU, Professor in Cultural Economy, Director of ED58 Doctoral School
  • Delphine VALLADE, Professor in Economy, specialized in Social Economy

General methodology course: 4 hours (first week)

Individual guidance (definition of thesis subject and research methodology): 8 hours



French as a Foreign Language courses: 24 hours (6 hours per week)

  • Ville de Nîmes and Pont du Gard: Focus on the Roman Heritage of the Occitanie Region and overview of how this cultural heritage is promoted  
  • Causses et Cévennes: Focus on the promotion of natural heritage, and more broadly to non-built heritag
  • Grande Motte and Mediterranean seaside: Focus on urbanism (and architecture) and mass touris
  • Barcelona: Focus on Identity & Heritage, and transposition of the knowledge acquired to the specificities of the Catalan Region

The total number of places is limited to 40.

The price does not include the trip from China to Montpellier. Accommodation, meals and transportation to planned outings are all included (local transportation is not included)

The summer school is open to Master students looking to pursue doctoral studies in France or in Europe, or to add an international/European dimension to their research work in their home university.
