Sciences Po Lille is a high selective, public and international institute, which creates the future influencers of social, economic and political powers, in France, in Europe and worldwide. We have chosen to have a “human sized” school of 2000 students. All the students at Sciences Po Lille, live in Lille, in the heart of a dynamic metropolis filled with students which is conveniently close to major European capitals (London, Paris and Brussels).

Sciences Po Lille Summer School consists of an intensive short-term program with different courses such as Law, Economics and Politics.

The 2019 Summer School offers a program around 2 tracks:

  • International - EU Affairs
  • French Language & Society

You will have the opportunity to divide your time in Lille between modules which focus on International and European affairs, including issues such as the climate change crisis,, migrations and European identity and values.  

The courses of French language aim to enhance and perfect your language skills as well as provide some understanding of the contemporary aspects of French society.

The COPAIN association will welcome you at Paris Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport on Friday 21st June at 12.00 pm (noon), and then drive you by bus to your hall of residence in Lille metropolis. The COPAIN association provides Northern France International students with administrative, logistical and cultural support before and during their mobility.

Before your arrival

From March 2019 on, the COPAIN association and local international students will run a group via a free instant messaging service (WeChat, WhatsApp…) to the benefit of our 2019 France Excellence Summer Schools participants.



You will be staying on the scientific campus next to Lilliad in the International Residence Hall (named REEFLEX) where you can take advantage of informal conversations with the international scientific community. You will be housed in a 16-18 m² furnished single room, with a private bathroom and wifi access.

The REEFLEX residence hall is close to the "Cité Scientifique” metro station: 10 min to Lille city centre and 3 min to the popular V2 Shopping Mall.


All breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included in the Summer School programme: these will be booked throughout your stay and delivered to your hall of residence, served in university canteen or in town. We will do our utmost to offer you varied restaurants and different meals each time. We hope you will be delighted to taste our French food! We will also take into account your cultural diversity and you will be given a prepaid card with which you will have the possibility to shop in a supermarket next to your hall of residence.


On your first day in Lille you will be handed a TRANSPOLE travel card: (local transportation company). This card will allow you unlimited use of the public transport networks in Lille metropolis (underground, bus, tram and train).


The COPAIN association will drive you back to Paris Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport (CDG) on Saturday 21th July 2019 at 12 pm (noon).


The Summer School is open to Master Students and Bachelor Students with an advanced level

In order to create a scientific network and to understand how research is done in France, you will have the opportunity to meet and talk to representatives from Sciences Po Lille’s associate laboratories and teachers-researcher with various fields of research.

This module aims to develop students' ability to demonstrate some understanding of the French language, as well as speak, read and write French with relative proficiency. Professors will help students to develop communication skills through regular class discussions, one-on-one conversations, role plays and oral presentations with classmates. The aim of this course is that students will gain fluency in French while increasing their knowledge of France and particularly of the Hauts-de-France region.

The course focuses on:

  • expanding your vocabulary
  • increasing basic conversational skills
  • improving pronunciation
  • increasing knowledge of grammar
  • improving listening skills
  • developing writing skills

Contemporary French society and politics

12h (8x1,5h)

This seminar intends to present the main aspects of the French society, compared with other European industrialized countries. Indeed, the main objective is to analyze how the French society functions, taking into account some of the main historical steps which established the basis of the welfare system, of the labor market, the role of women in society, the system of education, etc. Comparisons with other countries will be encouraged during all the seminar and students will be also encouraged to present the functioning of their own country. At the end of the seminar, students have to be able to understand some of the important issues in France and what is mainly at stake in contemporary debates.


Cultural site visits of exceptional historic and socio-economic interest as well as a local festive event will be included in the programme.

The Hauts-de-France region is typified by its agrarian economy, its ancient trade fairs tradition, its former textile and mine industries steeped in the Catholic values of its captains, its maritime and Flemish borders, its vivid memory of wounds inflicted by two world wars, its cultural and social renewal.

  • Visit of Lille: Guided tour of the streets, squares and monuments of the old town and its beautiful ancient architectures, as well as the pentagonal Citadel of the city wall
  • Museum of Fine Arts: discovery of the richest, most impressive French art collection outside of the capital city
  • Field Trip to Paris: A visit at the French Parliament and the discovery of the capital of France.
  • Bruges: Free time in the charming old Flemish city, also known as “the Venice of the North” thanks to its beautiful canals
  • Cooking Lesson: This class is a fun, educational insight into French cooking while learning recipes that you can recreate at home.
  • Field trip to Brussels: A day in Brussels to take a tour in the European Institutions and eat the capital’s specialties.
  • Louvre-Lens Museum: Visit of the Time Gallery in the Northern Louvre (built atop a former mine works) and its revolutionary museography
  • Fireworks: Sightseeing of the great fireworks in Lille on the French National Day (Sunday July 14th).
  • Ch'ti Evening: Local cuisine in a traditional restaurant and introduction to the Ch'ti linguistic and cultural specificity

The total number of places is limited to 30 participants.

The price does not include the trip from China to Paris. Accommodation, meals and local transportation are all included

The summer school will deliver 12 ECTS. The summer school is open to both Bachelor and Master students.
