3D BUILD 2019: BUILDING YOUR FUTURE!

Co-organised by the National School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture of Lille (ENSAPL, a prominent institution combining traditions and technologies to train both architects and landscape architects of the future), the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of the Institut Mines-Télécom Lille Douai (IMTLD, the largest multi-disciplinary engineering school in Northern France) and the Lille Northern France Higher Education & Research Institutions Association (ComUE LNF), the France Excellence Summer School 3D BUILD 2019 is a strong, innovative 130-hour training programme in line with top-tier research centres in architecture and civil engineering, that focuses on a technological revolution: the additive manufacturing for construction.

Midway between Paris, London and Brussels, at the heart of a high-performance academic and economic hub that makes innovation a priority, 3D BUILD 2019 will provide, on forward-looking and lively campuses, high-standard English-taught classes, scientific and industrial immersion in the field, as well as an introduction to research through a supervised project (the design and printing out of prototypes, the best of which will be displayed at the international event “Lille Metropole 2020, World Design Capital”).

Broadening your international experience under enjoyable and comfortable conditions with fellow students from pre-PhD France Excellence summer schools, 3D BUILD 2019 will offer lively social and festive events, full welcome services (incl. accommodation and catering), consistent French language and culture classes, as well as visits of remarkable historical and natural sites in Northern France and Belgium, opening access to a European region always on the move.

1. FACILITIES

Together with the COPAIN association, the International Academy, summer university of the ComUE LNF, will provide full welcome services, high standard facilities and a vibrant hall life.

COPAIN’s purpose is to offer practical support to Northern France international students; the International Academy is devoted to offering services to international students, filling the requirements of the France Excellence programme.

ARRIVAL IN FRANCE

The COPAIN association will welcome you at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) on Monday July 1st 2019 at 12 pm (noon), and then drive you by bus to your hall of residence in Lille metropolis.

BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL

From March 2019 on, the COPAIN association and local international students will run a group via a free instant messaging service (WeChat & WhatsApp) to the benefit of our 2019 France Excellence Summer Schools participants.

ACCOMMODATION

You will be staying on the scientific campus of the University of Lille, in an international residence hall named REEFLEX, where you can take advantage of informal conversations with the international scientific community. The furnished single rooms will be 16-18 m², with a private bathroom and wifi access.

REEFLEX is close to the “Cité Scientifique” metro station: 10 min to Lille city centre and 3 min to the popular V2 Shopping Mall.

CATERING

All breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included: these will be booked throughout your stay and delivered to your residence, served in university canteen or in town.

We will do our utmost to offer you varied restaurants and different meals each time. We hope you will be delighted to taste our French food! But as we know it may be harsh to suddenly switch from one diet to another, we will also take into account your cultural diversity and you will be given a prepayed card with which you will have the possibility to shop in a supermarket next to your residence. 

TRANSPORT

On your first day in Lille you will be handed a TRANSPOLE (local transportation company) travel card, which will allow you unlimited use of the public transport networks in Lille metropolis (underground, bus, tram and train).

2. SCIENTIFIC SYLLABUS

OPERATORS/LOCATION

The scientific programme of 3D BUILD 2019 will be operated on the ENSAPL campus (Villeneuve d’Ascq, http://www.lille.archi.fr/) by the Design, History, Territory and Materiality Laboratory (LACTH, one of the most esteemed laboratories of architecture in France) and the Civil Engineering and Environmental Research Centre of the IMTLD (http://imt-lille-douai.fr/).

The ENSAPL will open spacious classrooms, studios, computer and multi-media laboratories; the campus will become your second home. Courses on materials will take place at the Civil Engineering Department of IMTLD.

The robotic equipment for 3D printing will be provided by Polytech Lille (the Engineering School of the University of Lille* and a founding member of the first French network of engineering schools, the Polytech Group, http://www.polytech-lille.fr/english). *In the top 100 European most innovative universities of the Times Higher Education ranking (https://www.univ-lille.fr/home).

3D BUILD 2019 is the academic progeny of MATRICE.

Architecture is pulled towards technological innovation and cross-disciplinarity by the digital revolution; the additive manufacturing applied to the building industry requires the joint input from engineers and architects in the fields of materials, robotics, architectural design and real-time digital viewing. The research project named MATRICE (http://www.matrice-impression3d.fr/), conducted since 2016 notably by the ENSAPL, IMTLD and Polytech Lille, has been such a step into the future in the field of 3D printing with higher added-value forms and materials.

The 3D BUILD France Excellence Summer School is its direct academic result, at the crossroads of robotics, architecture and engineering. Based on a unique educational model, it is naturally open to students coming from different fields of study who will benefit from a high-end coaching in prototyping.

CONTENT OUTLINE

Join us in a truly exceptional 3D building experience!

Focusing on the innovative and fundamental aspects of additive manufacturing for construction, 3D BUILD 2019 will offer top scientific conferences, lectures, seminars and workshops, meetings with leading researchers in the field, scientific visits and demonstrations of cutting-edge equipment, as well as an introduction to research through a supervised project. The quality of the work undertaken and your scientific potential will be assessed.

Particular emphasis will be made on eco-friendly 3D building. You will be taught to design complex geometries that will be printed by an automated process, and led to take into account the ecological aspect of 3D printing for construction, on one hand by formulating and using printable materials with a low environmental footprint, on the other hand by the optimisation of the resulting subject. Theoretical inputs, numerical workshops and printing sessions will make up the scientific programme.  

Over half of the schedule will be devoted to the 70-hour scientific programme taught in English.

1. MIXTURE PROPORTIONING AND CHARACTERISATION OF PRINTABLE MORTARS (C1):

- Concrete: an Overview (main components of concrete, mixture proportioning)

- Rheology of Concentrated Suspensions at a Glance (definitions, main rheological behaviours, measuring a rheological behaviour)

- Additive Manufacturing of Cementitious Materials (specifications, rheological properties and printing parameters, rheological properties and shape, mixture proportioning of printable mortars)

2. MIXTURE PROPORTIONING AND CHARACTERISATION OF ECO-COMPATIBLE PRINTABLE MORTARS (C2):

- Printable Mortar – an Environmental Friendly Material (saving matter, a high binder content, LCA balance)

- Binders of Substitution (use of mineral admixtures, low carbon binders, chemical admixtures – a special role)

- Modifying and Optimising the Granular Skeleton (the importance of being large, use of recycled aggregates)

3. INTRODUCTION TO ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING FOR CONSTRUCTION (C3):

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROJECT

Designed to facilitate your admission to Doctoral programmes in France, the Scientific Research Project will require both personal and teamwork with theoretical and practical teachings. Each student will participate in the printing of a prototype, and the assessment will bear on the whole process from design to printing.

At the end of the seminar session, each group will present the designed shape/mortar and selected projects will be printed.

Preparation of Materials, Mixing, Pumping Printing of the Shapes. The printing will be made in the scale 1 studio of ENSAPL with a mobile robot provided by Polytech Lille.

3. RESTITUTION

The students’ works will be documented in a video and presented in front of the scientific board.

SCIENTIFIC VISITS

You will have the chance to visit Amsterdam, the most iconic city of the Netherlands. You will be introduced to the most significant Dutch buildings, whether turned to the history or the future.

Since the Netherlands are intricately involved in large-scale 3D printed elements for construction, you will get to see exciting examples of this technology in the town as well as in a famous Dutch architecture company. First, you will appreciate the 3D printed façade of the “Europe Building” developed for the EU presidency of the Netherlands in the old harbor area of Amsterdam. Then architects will introduce you to the way they work and to their projects in the privacy of their professional office.

The programme of this visit should secure you a unique experience of Amsterdam’s architecture.

Master students only.

Advanced English, excellent academic results and in-depth knowledge in architecture or civil engineering.

PROSPECTS

3D BUILD 2019 is a springboard for your enrolment in a PhD programme in France and Europe. Depending on their level and results, several possibilities will be offered to the best candidates in the following fields:

- additive manufacturing in the LACTH (ENSAPL),

- civil engineering, mixture proportioning and characterisation of eco-compatible printable mortars, in the Civil Engineering and Environmental Research Centre of IMTLD,

- both fields, co-directed in the above-mentioned research centres.

In the latter case, you will have the opportunity to further study this topic under the remote supervision of the professors when you are back at your home university.

3. CULTURAL SYLLABUS

Want to learn French? Feel like discovering the French society and culture? Always dreamed of visiting historical and natural sites in France? 3D BUILD 2019 will give you that opportunity, leading to a full access to the French-speaking world.

The International Academy, which fosters integration and interactive exchange between students from various disciplines, will deliver exciting teachings in the French language and culture in the state-of-the-art building of graduate school Sciences Po Lille, perfectly located in downtown Lille. A final assessment of the knowledge and skills acquired in French language during the session will close your training.

Both the International Academy and the COPAIN association will organise valuable site visits of historical and natural interest in the Hauts-de-France region and Belgium, along with festive events. What a great occasion to meet other students in a more relaxed framework and to chat with professors and researchers in a friendly atmosphere! The official Welcome Reception at the Haut-de-France Regional Council will be the institutional climax of the programme.

FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE CLASSES

Experienced academic advisors, teachers, lecturers, professionals from ComUE LNF member institutions will offer their competence in the following domains:

1. FRENCH FOR FOREIGNERS: General written and spoken French: syntax, morphology, vocabulary, phonology.

Courses will enable you to get acquainted with day-to-day French or to strengthen your communication skills, depending on your initial level. You will learn how to interact and, through appropriate and various activities in connection with daily life, you will get involved in the French culture.

2. FRENCH SOCIETY: French space, how better to apprehend its social and cultural context than in France?

Cultural keys together with a little geography in both regional and national dimensions, major social issues, prominent historic facts since the Modern period, France in the European Union.

3. INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION: An introduction to main elements: uniformity, difference and diversity.

How better to adapt to a new environment? You will be invited to question your own on-going cross-cultural experience and acculturation strategies. You will be brought to find keys and make the best of your potential while studying in France.

 

CULTURAL VISITS

The Hauts-de-France region is typified by its maritime and Flemish borders, agrarian economy, ancient trade fairs tradition, former textile and mine industries steeped in the Catholic values of its captains and vivid memory of wounds inflicted by two world wars. France’s youngest region is now renowned for its competitiveness, dynamic cultural and social life, and a unique mix of Flemish cheerfulness and French elegance.

OLD LILLE, FORTIFICATIONS & MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS: Guided tour of streets, squares and monuments of the old town and its beautiful ancient architecture, as well as the pentagonal Citadel of the city wall of Lille; discovery of the richest, most impressive French art collection outside of the capital city (Saturday July 6th).

2. BRUGES, BELGIUM: Free time in the charming old Flemish city, also known as “the Venice of the North” thanks to its beautiful canals (Sunday July 7th).

3. LOUVRE-LENS MUSEUM & FIREWORKS IN LILLE: Visit of the Time Gallery in the northern Louvre (built atop a former mine works) and its revolutionary museography (Saturday July 13th) and sightseeing of the great fireworks in Lille on the French National Day (Sunday July 14th). Optional. Alternatively, you are free to spend the weekend wherever you want on your own expense.

4. CH'TI EVENING: Local cuisine in a traditional restaurant and introduction to the Ch'ti linguistic and cultural specificity (Thursday July 18th).

6. EXCURSION TO THE COAST: Visit of the spectacular Site des Deux-Caps (Opal Coast) from which one can see the British cliffs; visit of Nausicaá - French National Sea Experience Centre, the biggest aquarium in Europe (Saturday July 20th).
